Case Study

Tracy Felstead (WSTA alumni 2018-19)

What did you do before teaching?

I worked in a range of different positions and sectors, including interior design, selling cosmetics and jewellery, personnel, insurance administration, retail, hospitality and in a hospital!

Why teaching?

Whilst I was talking to my own children about how their career aspirations should be based on what they enjoy rather than be focused on earnings or status, I realised I had not followed my own advice. I had wanted to be a teacher when I was at school but there I was, 25 years later, in a job that gave me little enjoyment or satisfaction.

Why WSTA?

Once I made the decision to follow my dream, I knew I needed experience, so I worked as a Teaching Assistant, later becoming a Cover Supervisor at the same school. I wanted experience at different schools and was lucky enough to gain a position as a Cover Supervisor at The Westgate School. Within a few weeks of working there, I knew I wanted to train with WSTA – the collegiate support and positive environment within the school was inspirational.

What is the best thing about being a trainee teacher with WSTA?

So many things! If I had to pick one, I would say the support from other colleagues.

What has been your Greatest Achievement so Far?

Surviving teaching online during Covid and all the constant changes over that year!

Future Aspirations

I am very happy where I am – I love teaching and I aim to just get better and more confident in what I do.

What advice would you give to a prospective trainee?

Be prepared to work hard and seize every opportunity to learn from others.
